SAN DIEGO — The Coast Guard suspended its search Monday for a 17-year-old male who went missing while swimming in the waters off Mission Beach Sunday evening.
The Coast Guard began searching Sunday after watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector San Diego’s Joint Harbor Operations Center were notified that the San Diego Life Guards were searching for a missing swimmer.
Coast Guard Cutter Petrel, an 87-foot patrol boat homeported in San Diego, searched throughout the night Sunday and into Monday morning. Coast Guard Cutter Haddock, also an 87-foot patrol boat homeported in San Diego, searched Monday.
A Coast Guard Station San Diego 45-foot Response Boat Medium crew also assisted in the search Sunday night. Coast Guard Sector San Diego MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crews searched Sunday evening and Monday.
Coast Guard assets searched approximately 228 square nautical miles.
“Our thoughts go out to the family of the missing swimmer during this extremely difficult time,” said Lt. Andrew Williams, Sector San Diego command duty officer. “Suspending a search is not an easy decision and it is made with great care and consideration.”
