NEW YORK – The Coast Guard suspended the search for a swimmer who was reported missing near Perth Amboy at 2 a.m. Saturday.
The New Jersey State Police located a body in the Raritan River, New Jersey, at approximately 8:30 p.m. about 50 yards offshore using a side scan sonar device. A dive team arrived on scene but was unable to recover the body due to currents. The State Police plan to recover the body Sunday morning. While positive identification cannot be verified until the morning, authorities believe it is the body of the missing swimmer.
The Coast Guard, NYPD Divers and aviation crews, the South Amboy and Perth Amboy Police Departments, and Perth Amboy Marine Units searched more than 15 hours and covered approximately 30 miles before suspending.
The New Jersey State Police continue to investigate the accident.
