Coast Guard suspends search for missing kayaker near Eatons Neck, NY

NEW YORK — The Coast Guard suspended their search for a kayaker at approximately 5:00 p.m., Monday who went missing from Crab Meadow Beach, New York, late Sunday afternoon.

Missing is Selvin Vasquez-Enamorado, a man in his 20s.

Coast Guard assets searched 201 square nautical miles for approximately 21 hours.

At approximately 5:45 p.m. Sunday afternoon, watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound were notified by the Huntington Harbor Master of a kayaker who went missing.

Agencies involved in the search include:

  • Coast Guard Station Eatons Neck
  • Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod
  • New York State Park Rangers
  • Suffolk County Marine
  • Suffolk County Aviation
  • Smithtown Constables
  • New York Department of Environmental Conservation

“Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of Mr. Vasquez-Enamorado during this painful time,” said Capt. Andrew Tucci, commander Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound. “We are grateful for the cooperation of the New York State Park Rangers, Suffolk County officials, and other agencies who devoted many hours to this search effort. When the Coast Guard makes the difficult decision to suspend a search, it is always after the most careful consideration, and with regret that we were not able to achieve a better outcome.”
