Coast Guard suspends search for missing boater

KEY WEST, Fla. – Coast Guard Sector Key West has suspended its search for David Schermerhorn at 7:45 p.m. Sunday.

Coast Guard search and rescue coordinators in Key West received a report from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office of an aground abandoned boat near Boca Chica, Fla., Saturday around. It appeared that the vessel was operated the boat near Middle Sambo, an area near the reef, five miles south of Key West.

Upon notification of the abandoned vessel, Coast Guard crews began searching for its operator. During the search Saturday, a Coast Guard small boat crew from Station Key West located the remains of a person.

MCSO detectives are investigating the remains and are working to positively identify the person.

The Coast Guard continued its search through Saturday night into Sunday as the remains could not be positively identified. With no new leads or correlating information the Coast Guard has suspended the active search for Schermerhorn and may resume the search if new information is received.
