Coast Guard suspends search for missing 17-year-old swimmer near Long Branch, N.J.

NEW YORK – The Coast Guard has suspended its overnight search for a missing 17-year-old male who had been swimming in the waters off Pier Village in Long Branch, N.J., Sunday.

The missing person is described as a light brown-skinned male wearing a white t-shirt and khaki shorts. He is 5′ 6″, 162 lbs.

The Coast Guard requested first-light search assistance from Monmouth County, N.J., Police Department early Monday, who conducted an aerial search from Asbury, N.J., to Oceanic Beach, N.J. The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Sailfish, homeported in Sandy Hook, N.J., conducted a search from Monmouth Beach, N.J. to Long Branch, N.J.

“The overall search lasted 14.5 hours and covered 88 square nautical miles,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Erica Jewell, an operation specialist with the Coast Guard Sector New York Command Center.

Next of Kin notifications have been made. The Coast Guard search was suspended at 9 a.m.
