Coast Guard suspends search for girl missing near Surfside Beach

Coast Guard 8th District NewsHOUSTON – The Coast Guard has suspended it’s search for a girl who was missing near Surfside Beach, Saturday.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Station Freeport received a report that the 13 year-old girl went missing while swimming near Beach Access Road 1 with a friend shortly before 9 p.m., Friday.

The Coast Guard began searching Friday with a MH-65C Dolphin rescue helicopter and crew from Coast Guard Air Station Houston, as well as a 25-foot Response Boat-Small and crew from Station Freeport. Surfside Police Department also assisted in the search.

The Coast Guard searched an area of more than 36 square nautical miles.

“The Coast Guard would like to remind beach-goers to be safe while enjoying the holiday weekend, and to heed all posted and verbal warnings regarding beach conditions from lifeguards and other authorities,” said Petty Officer First Class Joseph Medina, search and rescue controller at Coast Guard Sector Houston-Galveston.
