Coast Guard suspends search for child off Long Beach, N.Y.

NEW YORK — The Coast Guard has suspended their search for a 10-year-old boy missing in the waters off Long Beach, New York.

The child was last seen last seen swimming with his 11-year-old brother near Ocean Beach Park around 6:15 p.m., Tuesday.

Nassau County emergency responders notified the Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound command center that the boy was missing. The watchstanders immediately dispatched rescue crews and began a coordinated search effort.

During the rescue effort, searchers covered more than 310-nautical miles for a total of 22 hours.

Involved in the search were:

  • A Coast Guard Station Jones Beach 45-foot Response Boat-Medium crew
  • A Coast Guard Station Jones Beach 29-foot Response Boat-Small crew
  • Two Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crews
  • An aircrew aboard an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod
  • An aircrew aboard an HC-144A Ocean Sentry aircraft from Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod
  • Coast Guard Cutter Tybee, an 87-foot Patrol Boat homeported in Woods Hole, Mass.

The Coast Guard always urges swimmers to always remain in areas where lifeguards are present. Be aware of the current sea conditions, as well as any weather that is forecasted. The ocean is powerful and can overtake even the best swimmers.
