Coast Guard Suspends Mystery Kayak Case

BOSTON – Lacking any leads or indications a kayaker was in distress the Coast Guard suspended its search regarding an overturned kayak found adrift today near Plum Island and Ipswitch Bay, Mass.

A 13-foot kayak was located by a boater about about noon today. A 47-foot motor life boat from Coast Guard Station Merrimack River and an HH-60 helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station conducted a series of three searches for anyone in distress in the area.

The search was suspended this afternoon pending any information indicating someone was actually in distress.

The orange Keowee II brand kayak recovered by Station Merrimack River’s crew has serial number WEM29386ES9S and has a black nylon rope tied to its bow. Anyone with information about this kayak should call Coast Guard Sector Boston at (617) 223-3201 or via marine radio channel 16.

The Coast Guard reminds all boaters to file a float plan and wear their lifejackets when getting underway
