Coast Guard suspends its response to Anacostia River

5th Coast Guard District NewsBALTIMORE — The Coast Guard has suspended its response to the Anacostia River Monday, based on initial lab results that conclude the reported spill is not petroleum-based or hazardous material.

“We believe, based on the initial lab results as well as expert analysis of the results, that it is not a threat to public safety or the environment,” said Lt. Cmdr. Randall Brown, the chief of the response department at Coast Guard Sector Baltimore. “This has been a unified response from the state, local and federal agencies from the District of Columbia and Maryland focused on public safety and minimizing the environmental impact.”

As additional lab results come in, the Coast Guard will remain in contact with the incident command members and local agencies and take appropriate actions if necessary.
