Coast Guard strengthens pollution response capabilities

7th Coast Guard District NewsKEY WEST, Fla. — Leadership personnel from Coast Guard Sector Key West and the Coast Guard Auxiliary in the Florida Keys met with local Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotillas in the Upper Florida Keys Monday and Tuesday to raise awareness about the challenges associated with pollution response cases.

This outreach campaign was an effort to bolster the Coast Guard’s pollution response capacity. The goal is to maximize Coast Guard’s readiness and response to possible oil and hazardous substances that could impact Florida’s coastline.

“Over the past four years, Sector Key West has observed a 300 percent increase in pollution incidents in the Florida Keys,” said Capt. Pat DeQuattro, commander of Sector Key West. “During this period the Auxiliary has been an outstanding partner and we hope to see continued and increased participation for our marine environmental response mission.”

The Coast Guard Auxiliary is the uniformed, volunteer component of the Coast Guard, an invaluable force multiplier, whose members assist the active duty Coast Guard in most mission areas.
