NORTHPORT, N.Y. – The Coast Guard held a memorial service for Petty Officer 3rd Class Nathan B. Bruckenthal at Coast Guard Station Eaton’s Neck, N.Y., Friday.

Bruckenthal, a Stony Brook, N.Y., native, was killed in action while serving Operation Iraqi Freedom April 24, 2004. He was 24-years-old. Family, friends and military members gather each year at Eaton’s Neck to remember him and honor his service.

Morning colors were raised and the memorial begun shortly after 8 a.m. During the service, Honorary Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Ric Bruckenthal, father, and Capt. Joseph Vojvodich, commander Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound, Conn., spoke and two junior members of Station Eaton’s Neck read aloud Bruckenthal’s biography. The station bell rang and members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary laid a ceremonial wreath in Long Island Sound while a chaplain provided the benediction.

“His legacy serves as a reminder that his character is in all of us.  We inherited a service shaped by many who have scarified and endured.  We are part of a noble and honorable profession.  We remain integral to the safety and security of our nation, as an organization built upon selfless service from the likes of Nate Bruckenthal,” said Capt. Joseph Vojvodich, during his speech.

Bruckenthal joined the Junior ROTC while attending high school in Herndon, Va.  He was later a member of the Ridgefield Connecticut Volunteer Fire Department but moved back to Long Island and subsequently joined the Coast Guard in 1998.

Because of his unique skills and abilities, Bruckenthal was chosen to be among the first Coast Guardsmen deployed to Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom in early 2003. On his first Persian Gulf deployment he was awarded the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal and the Combat Action Ribbon. Bruckenthal was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star with Valor, the Purple Heart, and the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal.

Bruckenthal will always be remembered for his kindness to others, sense of humor, devotion to his family, and service to his country.
