Coast Guard Station Eastport medevacs fisherman near Eastport, Maine

45 3BOSTON — A Coast Guard 45-foot motor lifeboat crew from Station Eastport medevaced a man from the 35-foot fishing vessel Latta II Monday.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Northern New England’s command center received a call via VHF-16 radio at 4:20 p.m. from the captain of the Latta II reporting one of his crewmembers had sustained injuries to his left hand while operating a winch.

A 45-foot motor lifeboat crew from Station Eastport launched and arrived on scene at 4:49 p.m. and took the man aboard.

At 5:02 p.m. the Coast Guard crew transferred the patient to awaiting emergency medical services personnel from the Washington County Emergency Medical Service Authority at a pier in Deep Cove on Moose Island.

“Time is of the essence during a medevac,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Jessie Johnson, a watchstander at Sector Northern New England’s command center. “The station crew was on scene quickly, and with EMS standing by at the pier, they were able to transfer care.”
