Coast Guard Security Zone During Papal Visit

New York -The Coast Guard will establish security zones on the East River during the papal visit this week.

Private vessels will not be allowed to pass through security zones that will first be established Friday Apr. 18, in the vicinity of the Wall Street Heliport, Manhattan, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., and from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

From 10 to 2 p.m., Friday Apr. 18, the Coast Guard will establish security zones in the East River near the United Nations Headquarters. This is area covers from East 35th street to the Queensboro Bridge.

Ferries and commercial passenger vessels will need to gain transit permission from the Coast Guard via marine band VHF-FM Channel 16.

Coast Guard cutters will be patrolling the waters during these times and making scheduled broadcasts over channel 16 and the 3N notification system. Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) participants will receive notice via VHF-FM Channel 14.

Violations of any security zones are punishable by a $50,000 fine, five years imprisonment or both.
