Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound holds change of command ceremony

NEW HAVEN, CONN. – Capt. Edward J. Cubanski III relieved Rear Adm. Joseph M. Vojvodich, former commander of Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound, during a change of command ceremony in New Haven, Conn., Friday.

Rear Adm. Daniel B. Abel, commander, Coast Guard First District, was the presiding official over the ceremony.

During the ceremony, Capt. Vojvodich was promoted to the rank of Rear Adm. by Rear Adm. Abel.

Sector Long Island Sound’s responsibilities include Search and Rescue, Port Safety and Security, Maritime Law Enforcement, Domestic Ice Breaking, Aids to Navigation, Marine Environmental Protection, Waterways Management, Marine Inspection and Casualty Investigation.

Vojvodich, a native of Richmond, Ohio, will be reporting to Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington, D.C., to serve as the Program Executive Officer and Director of Acquisition Programs.

Cubanski, a native of Norwich, Conn., reports from the Eighth District staff, where he served as the Response Division Chief from 2012 to 2013 and as the Incident Management Branch Chief from 2010 to 2012.

The change of command ceremony is a time-honored naval tradition, which formally acknowledges the transfer of responsibility, authority and accountability from one individual to another.
