Coast Guard searching Maine waters for possible person overboard

1st Coast Guard District News
BOSTON – The U.S Coast Guard is searching for the owner of an inflatable life jacket and kayak-type craft that were found near Wood Island, Maine, Saturday.

A Good Samaritan located an adrift and inflated yellow life jacket offshore on the eastern side of Wood Island. There are no additional markings on the jacket.

An overturned small, orange kayak-type craft was later discovered onshore Wood Island and may be correlated with the adrift life jacket.

Currently there is an HU-25 Falcon jet crew and MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod; a boat crew from Coast Guard Station South Portland; Biddeford Police; and a Maine Marine Patrol crew are searching.

“We are hoping the owner of the life jacket and boat are safe on land and these items just weren’t properly secured, but we are searching just in case there is someone in distress,” said Chief Petty Officer Rob Childress, the command duty officer at Coast Guard Sector Northern New England. “If these items belong to you or if you know of an overdue boater, we ask that you please give us a call to let us know.”

To contact the Coast Guard with information about the life jacket or the kayak, please call Sector Northern New England at 207-767-0302.

This is Sector Northern New England’s 206th search and rescue case since January 2011.
