Coast Guard searching for overdue fisherman off the coast of Ponce, Puerto Rico

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — Coast Guard rescue crews are searching Friday for an overdue fisherman off the coast of Ponce, Puerto Rico.

José Montero Rosado, 58, is a resident of Ponce, who is overdue after he reportedly went out by himself on a fishing trip Wednesday morning from Villa Marina in Ponce to the island of Caja de Muertos.

Watchstanders in Coast Guard Sector San Juan received initial notification of the incident Thursday evening through a phone call from a friend of Montero Rosado.

The friend reported to the Coast Guard that Montero Rosado had gone out on an 18-foot wooden white and black boat and did not return Thursday morning to Villa Marina when he was expected to arrive.

Rescue crews searching for Montero Rosado are:

• MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter deployed to Coast Guard Sector San Juan from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C.

• MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Borinquen

• HC-144 Ocean Sentry Aircraft deployed to Coast Guard Air Station Borinquen from Coast Guard Air Station Miami

• Coast Guard Auxiliary fixed-wing aircraft from Isla Grande, Puerto Rico

Coast Guard Watchstanders also notified Puerto Rico Police Joint Forces of Rapid Action of the developing situation, and are assisting with the search efforts with responding marine and air units.
