Coast Guard searching for missing swimmer near University of New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS — The Coast Guard is searching for a man who reportedly did not surface after jumping from rocks at Lake Pontchartrain, La., near the University of New Orleans lakefront, Thursday.

Coast Guard Sector New Orleans received a call at approximately 4:30 p.m. from a New Orleans Police Department dispatcher reporting that the man had jumped from rocks at Lake Pontchartrain with friends and did not surface.

Sector New Orleans immediately launched a 25-foot smallboat and crew from Coast Guard Station New Orleans to search for the missing swimmer.

The New Orleans Police Department and Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries are also involved in the search.

An Urgent Marine Information Broadcast (UMIB) was also issued to mariners as a caution in the area.
