Coast Guard Searching for Missing St. Augustine Man

The Coast Guard is searching for a missing fisherman 40-miles east of St. Augustine, Fla., who was reported missing by his brother yesterday at about 9 p.m.

Steve Senecal, 34, of St. Augustine, Fla., left from the Lighthouse Boat Ramp in St. Augustine to go for a day of recreational fishing. He was supposed to be back at 7 p.m. when he didn’t show up his brother called the Coast Guard. Rescue crews have located his 25-foot recreational fishing vessel adrift approximately 27-miles northeast of St. Augustine, but Senecal was not aboard.

A Coast Guard C-130 fixed wing aircraft from Air Station Clearwater, Fla., located the vessel and vectored in a U.S. Navy helicopter crew to investigate. The Navy aircrew determined there was no one aboard the vessel.

The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Kingfisher is at the 25-foot vessel’s position to further investigate. Coast Guard rescue coordinators from Sector Jacksonville will have the Kingfisher and the Coast Guard and Navy aircraft continue to search the area. A 47-foot rescue boat crew from Coast Guard Station Mayport is towing the vessel back to their station.

Seas off of St. Augustine are three- to-four feet with 16 knot speeds.
