Coast Guard searching for missing boy

BERWICK, La. – The Coast Guard is searching for a child who went missing today while swimming in the Atchafalaya River.

The Coast Guard received the call at 4:34 p.m. today from the Bayou Vista Fire Department in Morgan City, La.

The 11-year old boy was diving from a rock while wearing a life jacket, when the life jacket surfaced without him.

Searching are:

A Coast Guard HH-65C rescue helicopter crew from Air Station New Orleans.

A Coast Guard 25-foot boatcrew from the Marine Safety Office Morgan City, La.
*
A boatcrew from the St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Department.
*
A boatcrew from the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Department.
*
An Acadiana Ambulance helicopter crew.
*
The Bayou Vista Fire Department.
*
The Berwick Fire Department.
*
The Berwick Police Department.

The Coast Guard has closed the Atchafalaya River between mile marker 119 to 123 to all vessel traffic.

The Coast Guard is scheduled to resume first light searches tomorrow, April 15, 2007.
