Coast Guard Searching for Missing Boater

SEATTLE – The Coast Guard searched for a missing boater from Des Moines, Wash., near the San Juan Islands today.

Coast Guard Station Port Angeles received a call that the boater got underway Jan. 15, aboard the 21-foot pleasure craft, Dog Breath, and was thought to be going to Blake Island. The caller reported they received a phone call Tuesday, from the boater, stating he had anchored at Patos Island and was staying there until the weather calmed.

An Air Station Port Angeles HH-65 helicopter crew and a Coast Guard Auxiliary helicopter pilot searched one and a half hours for the boater while Group Port Angeles investigated other leads to his whereabouts. The man was found to be safe at Friday Harbor after Group Port Angeles made a call to the marina.

The Coast Guard reminds boaters that, for their safety, they should make a float plan letting family and friends know where they will be and for how long. It is also a good idea to be sure they have a good description of the vessel or a photograph.
