Coast Guard searching for fishing boat crewman off N.C.

ATLANTIC BEACH, N.C. – Coast Guard crews are searching for a crewman who fell off a fishing boat approximately 27 miles off Cape Lookout, N.C., Thursday.

Coast Guard watchstanders were notified by the fishing boat Shelley’s crew after a personnel count at 10 a.m. revealed the crewman was missing. The 35-year-old man was last seen on board at 8 a.m. and was not wearing a life jacket.

The Shelley, home ported in Beaufort, N.C., is a 32-foot commercial fishing boat with a white superstructure and a red hull. Search and rescue crews have searched 517 square nautical miles for the missing crewman.

Assets involved in the search are:

  • An MH-60J Jayhawk helicopter from Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C.
  • An HC-130J Hercules aircraft from Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C.
  • The 87-foot Coast Guard Cutter Finback homeported in Cape May, N.J.
  • A 47-foot rescue boat crew from Station Fort Macon, N.C.
  • An H-60 U.S. Navy helicopter

The Coast Guard recommends all boaters wear lifejackets while underway.
