Coast Guard Searches for Overdue Sailboat

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — The U.S. Coast Guard is searching for an overdue sailboat that was on a round-trip from San Francisco to the Farallon Islands yesterday.

63-year old Jim Gray, of San Francisco, left alone on his 40-foot sailing vessel “Tenacious” sometime yesterday morning and was expected back yesterday evening. When he did not return and did not answer cell phone calls, his wife notified the Coast Guard at 8:35 p.m. The Coast Guard searched all night with a C-130 Hercules fixed-wing aircraft, an HH-65 Dolphin helicopter, an 87-foot coastal patrol boat, and a 47-foot motor life boat. No signs of distress and no signs of the missing vessel have been found. The Coast Guard will continue the search today.

Mr. Gray is reported to have over ten years of sailing experience. His vessel is well-equipped with communication, safety, and emergency gear.
