Coast Guard Searches for Missing Diver

HONOLULU — The Coast Guard continues today to assist Hawaii County Fire Department rescuers with a search for a missing diver at Kahena Beach off the southwest corner of the Big Island.

HCFD relayed a request for assistance to search for the missing diver at 7:30 p.m. Sunday. An HH-65 Dolphin helicopter and crew, from Barbers Point, Sunday searched an area approximately 15 square miles along the coast and offshore. HCFD crews are searching the shoreline and in-shore areas.

The 25-year-old male diver was reported missing to HCFD by his diving partner at about 7:30 Sunday evening. Despite poor visibility, Coast Guard crews will continued searching through Sunday night and plans are to launch the Coast Guard Cutter Kiska, homeported in Hilo, at first light Monday.
