Coast Guard searches for missing boat near Mattapoisett Harbor

BOSTON – The Coast Guard is searching for a missing 22-foot pleasure boat with with three people on board near Mattapoisett Harbor today.

Sector Southeastern New England received a report at 11:54 a.m. that an 18-foot pleasure craft with four people on board overturned in 3-to 4- foot seas in the vacinity of Mattapoisett Harbor.

Three of the people were picked up by a Good Samaritan vessel in the area and returned safely to shore.

A white 22-foot Bayliner, with blue stripes, picked up the other person in the water. The Coast Guard so far has been unable to locate the Bayliner to make sure that all on board are ok.

The Coast Guard is conducting an intensive search for Fitzroy Libert, who is believed to be from the Boston area, and was rescued by the crew of the Bayliner.

Four rescue vessels are currently searching, including a Station Woods Hole, Mass. 41-foot utility boat, a Massachusetts Environmental Police Boat, a Mattapoisett Police Boat, and the Mattapoiset Harbor Master.

“The Coast Guard is looking for a 22-foot Bayliner with white and blue stripes which picked up Mr. Libert,” said John Harland from Sector Southeastern New England. “We would like to confirm Mr. Libert is ok and made it back to shore safely.”
