Coast Guard Searches for Miami Man

MIAMI – Coast Guard crews are currently searching for a disoriented Miami boater on a disabled 33-foot vessel approximately 100 miles south of Miami in the waters near Cay Sal Bank, Bahamas.

Eddie Hernandez, 32, used a satellite phone to contact Coast Guard Sector Miami this morning. He said his boat was disabled and his Global Positioning System was not working properly. He said he had departed Crandon Park Marina in Key Biscayne, Fla., around 4 p.m. Thursday.

A crew from Coast Guard Station Miami Beach, Fla. along with an HH-65 helicopter crew from Air Station Miami was launched to search for Hernandez. He later reported to the Coast Guard that his GPS was functioning correctly and passed a position which was determined to be in Cay Sal Bank area.

A C-130 aircraft from Air Station Clearwater, Fla., an HU-25 Falcon jet from Air Station Miami and the Coast Guard Cutter Shamal were dispatched to the area of Cay Sal Bank to search for Hernandez.

Coast Guard Cutter Shamal is a 179-foot patrol boat homeported in Pascagoula, Miss.
