Coast Guard Responds to Windsurfers in Distress

SEATTLE- The Coast Guard received a report of three windsurfers in distress off Yaquina Head,Ore., at 4:30 p.m., today.

Coast Guard Group North Bend was contacted by the Lincoln County Dispatch to report the three windsurfers in distress. A helicopter crew from Air Facility Newport, Ore., and two 47-foot motor lifeboat crews from Station Yaquina Bay, Ore., were launched to assist.

Two of the windsurfers were able to swim to shore. The third windsurfer was found in the surf by the helicopter crew and taken to Samaritan Pacific Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
