Coast Guard responds to vessel fire near Channel Islands Harbor

OXNARD, Calif. — The Coast Guard has responded to a distress call received Sunday evening from a concerned friend of an individual on board a 22-foot recreational vessel reported to be on fire outside of Channel Islands Harbor, Calif.

The distress call came into the Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles – Long Beach Command Center just after 9:00 p.m. Coast Guard personnel were able to establish communications with the vessel via cellular phone and instructed the 2 individuals on board to fire an aerial marine flare.

A 47-foot motor life boat from Coast Guard Station Channel Islands Harbor witnessed the flare and located the vessel 2 nautical miles southwest of Channel Islands Harbor. Once on scene, Coast Guard members established that the fire had originated in the vessel’s engine and had been extinguished by the crew using water. There were no injuries to the two individuals on board. The vessel was placed in tow and taken to Channel Islands Harbor where a post search and rescue boarding was conducted.
