Coast Guard responds to vessel collision

NEW YORK – The Coast Guard and Suffolk County, N.Y., Police Marine unit responded to a collision between a water taxi and a small pleasure craft near Fire Island, N.Y., Sunday, July 10, 2011.

Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound received a mayday transmission that two vessels had collided and there were several injured people, at approximately 2:30 a.m..

A boat crew from Coast Guard Station Fire Island assessed and treated the injured boaters. Three people from the pleasure craft suffered injuries, including the boat operator.

Both vessels were escorted to a nearby marina to awaiting emergency medical services for further evaluation.

The cause of the collision is under investigation.

    After what I watched in Woods Hole, I’m not surprised by this. Weekenders were tripping over eachother while skirting the MV Ferries.
