Coast Guard responds to oil spill near Louisville

LOUISVILLE, Ky.— The Coast Guard is responding to a report from American Commercial Lines that a damaged towing vessel at the Jeffboat shipbuilding facility in Jeffersonville, Ind., was leaking diesel fuel, Friday.

At 10:30 a.m., Coast Guard Sector Ohio Valley received a report of a diesel spill originating from a damaged towing vessel being placed in dry-dock at the Jeffboat shipbuilding facility. ACL estimated the spilled amount to be between 1,200 and 1,500 gallons.

Sector Ohio Valley immediately deployed a pollution incident response team to the site while crewmembers onboard the vessel and Jeffboat placed containment boom around the vessel. An oil spill response contractor is also on scene recovering the spilled oil. The Coast Guard is working closely with the vessel owner to minimize all potential environmental impacts.

“Sector Ohio Valley is monitoring the situation very closely,” said Lt. j.g. Kirk Beckmann, Coast Guard Sector Ohio Valley’s public affairs officer. “We will work with the responsible party to ensure that the spill is cleaned up safely and effectively.”

The Coast Guard is investigating the cause of the accident in order to prevent similar incidents in the future.
