Coast Guard responds to houseboat fire

OAKLEY, Calif. – Three houseboats lay in wreckage and two sank at the pier after an early morning fire involving six houseboats at a pier in Oakley, Calif., Friday, Dec. 3, 2010. SAN FRANCISCO – The Coast Guard responded to a pier-side houseboat fire on Bethel Island this morning.

At 2:13 a.m., Coast Guard Station Rio Vista responded to the report of a houseboat fire at a pier in Dutch Slough. The Contra Costa County Fire and Sheriff’s Department also responded.

Six vessels were involved in the fire, three of which burned to the waterline and two sunk. Contra Costa County Fire Department has extinguished the fires.

Coast Guard pollution investigators were dispatched to the scene and discovered a sheen in the water. The Coast Guard is working with the marina owner to contain the pollution. Boom is being deployed to contain any pollution and the marina owner is working to salvage the vessels.
