Coast Guard Responds to Fishing Vessel Taking on Water

JUNEAU, Alaska (CG Public Affaris) – A Coast Guard rescue helicopter responded to a fishing vessel taking on water off Kodiak island this morning.

The Coast Guard operation center at Air Station Kodiak received the call at 4:15 a.m. from the 154-foot fishing vessel Lady Kiska reporting they were taking on water in the engine room seven miles off of Cape Chiniak near Kodiak Island.

The Lady Kiska reported that one of two dewatering pumps onboard had a damaged discharge valve. A MH-60 Jayhawk rescue helicopter was launched from Air Station Kodiak at 4:46 a.m.to deliver two additional dewatering pumps at 4:56 a.m.

With four people onboard the Lady Kiska successfully dewatered the engine room and arrived into Kodiak at 10:50 a.m.

The Lady Kiska reported 33,000 gallons of fuel onboard. The MH-60 conducted an overflight of the area and reported no sheen.

The Coast Guard marine safety detachment in Kodiak will conduct a marine casualty investigation.
