Coast Guard responds to damage in levee near Bradford Island

SAN FRANCISCO – The U.S. Coast Guard responded to a report of damage to the levee along the San Joaquin River, near Bradford Island, at 1:45 p.m. today.

Coast Guard Sector San Francisco Command Center received a report of a 150-foot washed out section of the levee and 12-feet of damage to the rock base in the vicinity of light 34, to the west of Fisherman’s Cut. A 25-foot response boat from Coast Guard Station Rio Vista was launched to assist Contra Costa Country Marine units in enforcing a 200-yard safety zone and no-wake zone in the area of the damaged levee. Coast Guard Cutter Tern, an 87-foot patrol boat homeported on Yerba Buena Island is also enroute to assist with safety zone enforcement.

The Coast Guard urges boaters to operate with caution when transiting the San Joaquin River in the vicinity of Bradford Island and maintain a safe distance from the damaged levee, vessels and equipment working on levee repairs.
