Coast Guard responds to 15 cases on Lakes Erie and St. Clair over the weekend

CLEVELAND — Coast Guard crews across lakes Erie and St. Clair had a busy weekend and responded to more than 15 cases of mariners in distress, rescuing three, assisting 21, and medically evacuating one.

Coast Guard 9th District crews throughout the Great Lakes region responded to 135 cases, rescuing six people and assisting 148 others.

The following synopses are some of the rescue, assist, and medical evacuation cases the Coast Guard was involved in on lakes Erie and St. Clair.

A rescue boatcrew aboard a 47-foot Motor Life Boat from Coast Guard Station Marblehead, Ohio, medically evacuated a woman suffering from a broken arm on Kelleys Island in Lake Erie to Marblehead, where emergency medical services further transported her to a local hospital early Saturday morning.

A rescue boatcrew aboard a 25-foot Response Boat-Small from Coast Guard Station Buffalo, N.Y., responded to and rescued two people whose boat had smashed into the Buffalo Harbor breakwall, Friday night.

A rescue boatcrew aboard a 25-Response Boat-Small from Coast Guard Station Ashtabula, Ohio, rescued a person who had fallen overboard in Conneaut Harbor, Friday night. The Coast Guard published a news release on the case.

A rescue boatcrew aboard a 45-foot Response Boat-Medium from Coast Guard Station Belle Isle, in Detroit, assisted two people who were in a 25-foot boat with engine problems in the Detroit River, Friday night. A commercial salvor towed the boat with the RB-M escorting to Wyandotte, Mich.

A rescue boatcrew aboard a 47-foot Motor Life Boat from Coast Guard Station Erie, Pa., assisted five people aboard a 20-foot boat taking on water in Lake Erie near Erie, Saturday afternoon. A good Samaritan rescued the five people and then transferred them to the MLB, who further transported the people to Presque Isle State Marine Park in Erie. A commercial salvor refloated and towed the vessel to safety.

A rescue boatcrew aboard a 25-foot Response Boat-Small from Coast Guard Station Buffalo assisted two kayakers unable to paddle against the strong current in the Niagara River, Saturday night.

A rescue aircrew aboard an MH-65C Dolphin helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Detroit assisted two people who were aboard a 38-foot boat taking on water in the Detroit River, Sunday afternoon. The aircrew located the two people and gave their position to a commercial salvor who was able to tow the vessel to safety.

A rescue boatcrew aboard a 33-foot Special Purpose Craft-Law Enforcement from Coast Guard Station Marblehead assisted a person on a 38-foot boat that caught fire in Lake Erie, near Vermillion, Ohio. A commercial salvor towed the boat to safety with the SPC-LE crew escorting.

A rescue boatcrew aboard a 24-foot Special Purpose Craft-Shallow Water from Coast Guard Station St. Clair Shores, Mich., assisted four people aboard an 18-foot boat with engine problems and unable to make way on their own in Lake St. Clair near Grosse Pointe, Mich., Sunday night. The SPC-SW crew towed the vessel to safety.
