Coast Guard responding to sunken vessel northeast of Carysfort Reef Light

MIAMI – Coast Guard crews are responding to a report of a sunken vessel with possible persons in the water approximately three miles northeast of Carysfort Reef Light, Fla., Monday.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Key West, Fla., received a report at approximately 1 p.m. Monday from the crew of the sailing vessel Chesapeake of a partially submerged 35 to 40-foot vessel with a black and white top off Carysfort Reef Light. In addition, they stated there was various debris floating in the water, including life jackets and seats.

A Coast Guard HU-25 Falcon jet crew from Air Station Miami was diverted, a smallboat crew from Coast Guard Station Islamorada, Fla., and a Coast Guard Air Station Miami MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew were launched. All searches yield negative results.

A subsequent Coast Guard Air Station Miami MH-65 aircrew is currently searching and the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Sitkinak was launched to assist with the search.
