Coast Guard responding to Mayday call, boat fire

BOSTON — Coast Guard and Massachusetts Port Authority Fire Department crews are responding to a Mayday call from a burning fishing boat about 25 miles east of Boston.

The Coast Guard Sector Boston command center received a Mayday call around 9:25 p.m., from the 36-foot wooden shrimp boat Kelly Rose stating “Mayday, Mayday, help.”

After the command center crew answered the distress call and did not receive a response from the Rye, NH.-based crew, they issued an urgent marine broadcast for assistance from mariners who may be in the area.

Two commercial fishing vessels responded to the broadcast reporting the boat was on fire. The fishing vessel Karen Lynn I located the two Kelly Rose crewmembers in a life raft near the burning boat. There are no reports of injuries at this time.

A 47-foot boat crew from Coast Guard Station Point Allerton is en route to the Karen Lynn I. The MassPort Fire Department and the motor vessel Gateway Endeavor are on scene conducting firefighting efforts.
