Coast Guard rescues surfer in distress

SEATTLE — The Coast Guard rescued a 17 year-old surfer offshore from Cape Kiwanda, near Pacific City, Ore., at approximately 2:00 p.m. Sunday.

A person walking on the beach contacted the Coast Guard reporting that they had seen a person in distress offshore. The Coast Guard diverted an HH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Astoria, Ore., and an HH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Air Station North Bend, Ore. The crew of the Dolphin helicopter located the teen, lowered a rescue swimmer and hoisted him from the water.

The teen was taken to shore and treated by local emergency response crews for minor hypothermia.
