Coast Guard rescues man in Lake Erie after he fell from a sailboat

CLEVELAND — The Coast Guard rescued a man who fell off a sailing vessel in Lake Erie Friday afternoon.

At 3:05 p.m., a watchstander at Coast Guard Station Ashtabula, Ohio, was contacted by a 911 operator who had received a report of a man falling off a sailing vessel in Lake Erie near Conneaut Harbor. The reporting source was another person from the vessel who stated the man was wearing a life jacket when he fell but could not locate him in the water.

Coast Guard Sector Buffalo issued an urgent marine information broadcast to inform boaters in the area of the situation.

A rescue boatcrew aboard a 25-foot Response Boat-Small launched from Station Ashtabula, rescued the man in the water, and transported him back to the station where emergency medical services were waiting. The man was released by EMS in good condition.

A rescue boatcrew from Coast Guard Station Erie, Pa., also launched aboard a 47-foot Motor Life Boat.
