Coast Guard rescues man after boat grounds on rocks near Stonington, Conn.

NEW YORK – A Wilmington, N.C., native was rescued by the Coast Guard after his boat grounded on rocks in Bartlett’s Reef near Stonington, Conn., around 6:45 a.m. today.

Victor Smith, 63, was rescued by a Coast Guard Station New London response boat crew after his anchor chain broke and the vessel became grounded.

There were no injuries or pollution reported.

The vessel began taking on water and became submerged before a salvage company could recover it. The company will send a crane and barge to recover the vessel this afternoon.

Smith recently purchased the vessel in Falls River, Mass., and was in the process of sailing back to Wilmington when the incident occurred.
