Coast Guard rescues man after boat capsizes near Bonner Bridge in NC

PORTSMOUTH, Va. — The Coast Guard rescued a 28-year-old man from the Oregon Inlet Wednesday after his 16-foot boat capsized near the Bonner Bridge near Nags Head, N.C.

Dare County 911 dispatchers contacted Coast Guard Sector North Carolina watchstanders at approximately 6:15 p.m. after good Samaritans reported seeing a man on top of a capsized vessel waving his arms.

Sector North Carolina watchstanders dispatched a crew aboard a 25-foot Response Boat – Small from Coast Guard Station Oregon Inlet to assist.

The RB-S crew arrived on scene at approximately 6:30 p.m., retrieved the man from the water and took him to to Station Oregon Inlet where he was met by awaiting emergency medical services personnel.

“Thanks to the quick actions and attentiveness of another boater in the area and close coordination between Dare County 911 and the Coast Guard, we were able to quickly resolve a very dangerous situation,” said Lt. Kevin Sullivan, the search and rescue mission coordinator at Sector North Carolina. “This is a good opportunity to remind boaters to maintain a sharp lookout, as you never know when you may contribute to saving a life.”

There were no reports of injuries.
