Coast Guard rescues kayaker in Bird Island Boat Basin

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Coast Guard crews rescued a man suffering from back pain while kayaking in the Bird Island Boat basin in Corpus Christi, Thursday.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Corpus Christi received a call at approximately 11:30 a.m., from a Padre Island National Seashore park ranger reporting a 43 year-old man who was unable to move in the boat basin. The man also lacked radio or phone communications.

An MH-65C Dolphin Rescue Helicopter and crew from Coast Guard Air Station Corpus Christi was dispatched to the scene at approximately 1 p.m. and quickly located the man. The rescue helicopter crew hoisted the man and transported him to Spohn Memorial Hospital for treatment. His condition is unknown.

The Coast Guard would like to encourage mariners to have a two-way radio while transiting the waterways.
