Coast Guard rescues boaters from sinking shrimp vessel

NEW ORLEANS — The Coast Guard rescued two boaters from the Cancer Free, a 53-foot shrimp boat, that was taking on water in the Gulf of Mexico on Sunday approximately 5 miles south of Bay St. Louis, Miss.

Coast Guard Sector New Orleans received a call at approximately 8 p.m., from a crewmember aboard the vessel, reporting that the vessel was taking on water and the crew of two needed immediate assistance.

The Coast Guard launched an HH-65C rescue helicopter crew from Air Station New Orleans. The helicopter crew arrived on scene, safely hoisted the crewmembers and transported them to the Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport.
