Coast Guard rescues 5 after shrimping vessel catches fire

MOBILE, Ala. — The Coast Guard rescued five people from a shrimping vessel that caught fire, Wednesday, approximately three miles south of Middle Bay Light in Mobile Bay.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Mobile received a report a 7:40 a.m. that a 45-foot shrimping vessel, Miss Angela, reportedly experienced electrical problems and caught fire.

A Coast Guard Station Dauphin Island 45-foot Response Boat-Medium and crew arrived on scene and transferred a fire extinguisher to the Miss Angela, while the fishing vessel Ann Marie assisted with firefighting efforts after the fire re-flashed.

All five evacuated the Miss Angela safely to the RB-M and reported no medical concerns.

“This case is a stark reminder that emergencies at sea can happen anywhere, anytime and often without warning,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Hillary Herbst. “The Coast Guard recommends always keeping inspected fire extinguishers on board for safety.”
