Coast Guard rescues 2 boaters from grounded sailing vessel near Altamaha Sound

CHARLESTON, S.C. — The Coast Guard rescued two boaters Friday from a grounded 31-foot sailing vessel near Altamaha Sound, Georgia.

Coast Guard Sector Charleston Command Center watchstanders were notified at 6:25 p.m. via VHF-FM radio channel 16 that the vessel had run aground and was taking waves over the bow.

A Coast Guard Air Station Savannah MH-65 Dolphin rescue helicopter crew launched and arrived on scene at 7:13 p.m. Rescue crews hoisted the boaters and transported them to St. Simons Island Airport were they reported to be in good condition.

The vessel is being monitored for pollution and the owners are making plans for salvage.

Coast Guard Station Brunswick also responded.
