Coast Guard rescue man off Galveston

HOUSTON – The Coast Guard rescued a man from his boat after it started sinking and then caught fire 10 miles off Galveston, Texas, today.

A watchstander at Coast Guard Sector Houston/Galveston received a mayday from the owner of the sailing boat Archangel at 5:57 a.m. The boater reported that his boat was sinking and he didn’t know why.

Coast Guard Station Galveston dispatched a rescue boat crew to rescue the man. A passing tanker turned to provide assistance, allowing the Archangel to tie up beside it. When the rescue boat crew arrived at the sailing boat, they found that it had caught on fire. The owner had put out the fire, but right after that, the boat was slammed into the tanker and it started to crack. The rescue boat crew took the man onto their boat.

The man was reported to have no injuries.
