Coast Guard Repatriates 28 Dominican Migrants

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Chincoteague repatriated 28 Dominican migrants pier side to La Romana, Dominican Republic, at approximately 5 p.m. today.

The crew of a Customs and Border Protection C-12 aircraft located the migrants at 7 p.m. Wednesday, approximately eight nautical miles northeast of Isla Saona, Dominican Republic. The migrants were traveling illegally to Puerto Rico aboard a 25-foot yola with one 40-horsepower outboard engine.

The Sector San Juan Command Center diverted the Chincoteague to intercept the yola, and enacted the Dominican Republic and U.S. Maritime Migration and Law Enforcement agreement to pursue the yola into Dominican Republic waters.

At approximately 8:48 p.m. the Chincoteague arrived on scene and intercepted the yola that was carrying 22 male and 6 female Dominican migrants. The crew of the Chincoteague safely transferred the migrants to the cutter, and while the migrants were being transferred, a U.S. Coast Guard HH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Air Station Borinquen, Puerto Rico, flew rescue support overhead.

The crew of the Chincoteague destroyed the 25-foot yola as a hazard to navigation.
