Coast Guard reminds Tampa area boaters to stay safe during hazardous weather

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The Coast Guard is urging mariners in Tampa, Florida and surrounding areas to exercise caution when venturing on the water due to severe weather expected until July 13.

The National Weather Service issued a statement reporting heavy rainfall, strong winds and frequent lightning strikes likely during the next few days.

Mariners are urged to ensure their safety equipment aboard is in good working condition before leaving the dock. This includes properly fitted life jackets for everyone aboard, navigation lights, distress signals and a fire extinguisher. The Coast Guard recommends boaters have a properly registered electronic position indicating radio beacon and are strongly encouraged to have a VHF-FM marine band radio on board thier vessel to monitor channel 16 for weather conditions and small craft advisories being issued in their area.
