The primary objective of the MASFO was to ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations pertaining to the safe shipment of cargo. The MASFO was comprised of ten teams strategically located throughout the port. Leveraging the jurisdictional authorities of each agency, the inter-agency teams were able to more thoroughly inspect containers, bulk liquid tanks, tractor trailers, trucks and truck drivers before shipments left the port.

“The MASFO was a great example of the interagency cooperative spirit that Charleston’s port community is known for,” said Capt. Mike White, commander Coast Guard Sector Charleston. “The timely and comprehensive inspections were aligned with the shared mutual objective of facilitating the safe and timely flow of commerce through the maritime, rail and highway modes of transportation.”

The initiative combined the capabilities of numerous agencies including Coast Guard, Customs and Border Patrol, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, Federal Rail Administration, National Cargo Bureau, State Transport Police, South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, Transportation Security Administration, and the South Carolina State Port Authority Police. This event also included safety inspectors and border safety specialists from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Texas Division.
