Coast Guard medically evacuates man off of cruise ship near Cuba

7th Coast Guard District NewsCARIBBEAN SEA — The Coast Guard medically ecavuated a 44-year-old man off of the cruise ship Carnival Liberty, 5-miles west of Santiago de Cuba, Cuba Friday.

Watchstanders at the Seventh Coast Guard District command center in Miami received notifcation at 8:45 a.m., from crewmembers onboard the cruise ship Carnival Liberty that a passenger was suffering from abdominal pain and needed medical attention.

At 10:15 a.m., Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater, Fla., launched an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew to fly more than 300 nautical miles to the scene.

Once on scene at approximately 1 p.m., the helicopter crew was able to safely hoist the man along with a ship’s nurse and transport them to Fisherman’s Hospital in Marathon, Fla., where he was transferred in stable condition.
