Coast Guard medically evacuates man from sailboat

CLEVELAND — The Coast Guard medically evacuated a man from a sailboat in Lake Michigan approximately 10 nautical miles south of Manistee, Mich., Sunday evening.

At about 4:50 p.m., Coast Guard Sector Lake Michigan, in Milwaukee, received a request for a medevac of a 57-year-old man reported to be suffering from cardiac arrest and heat exhaustion.

Sector Lake Michigan consulted with the Coast Guard 9th District duty flight surgeon at Coast Guard Air Station Detroit, who recommended a medevac.

A boatcrew from Coast Guard Station Manistee launched aboard a 25-foot Response Boat-Small and transported the man to awaiting emergency medical services in Manistee.

He was transported by EMS to West Shore Community Hospital in Manistee.

His condition is unknown at this time.

The Coast Guard reminds mariners to check and plan for the the weather before going out on the water. Applying sunscreen, wearing appropriate clothing, and staying properly hydrated can be just as important as wearing a lifejacket.
