Coast Guard medevacs woman from cruise ship Carnival Dream

SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO – The crew of an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter medically evacuated a woman from cruise ship Carnival Dream Thursday morning, approximately 20 nautical miles north of San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The 66-year-old woman is a U.S. citizen, who went unconscious and began suffering convulsions after initially complaining of headaches, requiring immediate medical attention ashore.

“The situation this morning was time-critical,” said Cmdr. James Sutton, Sector San Juan Chief of Response. “I believe the coordination between the Carnival Dream, the Sector San Juan Command Center and Air Station Borinquen was excellent. The crew of the Coast Guard rescue helicopter performed superbly and completed a highly dangerous evolution without incident. Ultimately, the crew ensured the patient received the emergent medical care she needed by delivering her safely to the hospital.”

Coast Guard controllers coordinated with the cruise ship’s crew and launched a rescue helicopter from Air Station Borinquen, Aguadilla, Puerto Rico to conduct the medical evacuation. Once on scene with the Carnival Dream, the helicopter crew hoisted the patient and cruise ship nurse onto the aircraft. The Dolphin helicopter crew transported the patient to the Medical Center Hospital in Río Piedras, Puerto Rico, where she transferred to awaiting Emergency Medical Services personnel.
